The West Haven community is mourning the death of a high school sophomore who was a member of the football team.
The West Haven High School principal announced the unexpected death of the football player.
Published reports identified the student as Christopher Fidalgo-Pugh.
One of the team's assistant coaches, James McCarthy, called him "one of the kindest and hardest-working young men," with intensity on the field and a smile in the hallways.
West Haven is scheduled to play Staples High School Saturday evening in the Class LL State Championship.
Staples Football shared their condolences over social media.
The school says counseling services will be available as long as they're needed.
