Westport police are unveiling a new initiative they hope will make their streets safer for everyone.
Westport's new traffic safety unit came out of conversations that town officials had with residents about what was really important to them.
"People were really worried primarily about distracted driving, speeders, poor behavior on the roadways," said Westport Police Lt. David Wolf.
This week marks the beginning of the department's traffic safety unit that will be run by officers Dominique Carr and Scott Thompson.
"They're going to be out there seven days a week," said Wolf.
The officers will be dedicated to traffic unlike patrol officers who can often get pulled away to other calls.
Carr and Thompson's primary mode of transportation will be a brand-new Tesla that will be monitoring traffic on the town's major roadways. Police hope the unit will curb people's behaviors on the roads.
The Westport traffic safety unit will also be used as an educational tool going out into the community to talk to students.
