The city of Westport has voted down an amendment to a 50-year-old ordinance banning the practice of trapping coyotes.
According to proponents, the ban would have targeted nuisance coyotes in the town, which have reportedly been killing residents’ pets and sometimes threatening children.
But while residents at the meeting agreed the town has a coyote problem, they couldn’t agree on how to solve it.
They say trapping coyotes is cruel and poses a threat to other animals, and also could conceivably catch children.
Residents say more studies are needed on how to solve the coyote problem.
