This week's "What's Ailing You" looks at carpal tunnel syndrome.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a pinched nerve in the wrist. Stamford hospital hand surgeon Dr. John Dowdle says some people are prone to carpal tunnel syndrome from repetitive motion, like using a keyboard.
"The majority of people with carpel tunnel do not need surgery, we can get them better with a splint and cortisone injection," says Dowdle. "There are some who live with carpel tunnel for years and it never gets worse."
He recommends resting your affected hand and using a wrist brace to alleviate the pressure.
Dowdle does say, however, that in some cases untreated carpel tunnel can lead to permanent nerve damage.
