In this week's "What's Ailing You" report, a local viewer touches on a holiday challenge that involves getting kids to be more giving.
Psychologists say children can be generous and giving, but it usually needs to be coaxed out of them with a little training and modeling by the adults around them.
Therapist James McGhin, of the Darien-based Center for Hope, says that hands-on projects give kids a great sense of giving and build character. You can encourage, he says, your children to part with a new toy of their own and wrap it up for a child in need. Or you can come up with a project that plays to your child's strengths, like artwork or volunteering at an animal shelter.
