The identities of the two special needs residents killed in a Wilton fire over the weekend have been revealed.
Wilton fire officials say Cynthia Timmins, 54, and Dana Conley, 57, both died from smoke inhalation as a result of the fire in their condo unit. Both residents were clients of the STAR organization, a not-for-profit group that supports people with developmental disabilities.
The fire that broke out in the Village Walk Condos is believed to have started somewhere between the kitchen and the dining room. Neighbors say that they heard loud alarms coming from the condo unit. Firefighters entered the home and found Conley unconscious at the base of the stairway and then Timmins by a bedroom door upstairs.
"Anytime we find someone unconscious or trapped, it's difficult for firefighters because that's what we strive to prevent and it's hard for them," Chief Paul Milositz says.
Officials say that it was the first multiple-death fire that they can think of in Wilton in at least 40 years. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but officials say it does not appear to be suspicious.
