Firefighters rescued a woman and her dog after they got stuck in mud in the Saugatuck River Tuesday afternoon.
Owner Karen Hagen was walking her dog, Brody, in the nearby park around 5:30 p.m. when the dog took off to chase geese across the mud.
“I’m running after him, calling his name but he’s not turning around. He just keeps running,” Hagen said.
Hagen said she tried to save her dog, but got stuck as well. People across the river saw her struggling and called 911.
Fire Marshal Nathaniel Gibbons describes the Saugatuck River at low tide as a mudbank.
Authorities found the woman trapped up to her knees in approximately 1 to 2 feet of heavy mud.
Westport Fire Department used a rapid deployment boat to reach Hagen and Brody. Both were safely brought back to shore.
“Once I knew we were safe, it was humorous, almost embarrassing honestly, but thank God it was a happy ending,” Hagen said.
