Hundreds of runners laced up their sneakers Sunday morning to take part in the 95th annual Yonkers Marathon.
The runners started at the Yonkers River Front Library, traveled North on Nepperhan Avenue to Tompkins Avenue, then crossed Broadway and traveled northbound in the southbound lanes.
"It's a tough course, it's the second oldest marathon in the country, and I would say probably the most difficult. This is a personal challenge and accomplishment for many of the runners,” said Yonkers Parks commissioner Steve Sansone.
The Boston Marathon is the oldest in the nation. It was first held in 1897. Yonkers is the second hilliest city in the nation. San Francisco is the first.
"You have to take it easy on the hills, but then you're always rewarded with a downhill,” said runner Hannah Mollett.
Juan Fernanda De Cordova was the first male marathoner to cross the finish line. His time was 2:48:03. Rebecca Payne was the first female marathoner to cross the finish line at a time of 3:51:42. This was her 27th marathon, and she says it was the most challenging.
