The City of Yonkers announced on Wednesday that overall crime is down 16% year-to-year.

"In 2025, we have recorded one of the lowest crime totals in Yonkers history," said Mayor Mike Spano.

According to the city, violent crime has dropped 42%.

Violent crimes include murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault.

To put that into perspective, in 2011 there were 918 total violent crimes.

Last year, the figure was down to 529.

Officials say a major driver of the success is the police departments' Crime Control Strategies Division.

"...Using advanced analytics, predictive modeling and real time incident mapping, license plate recognition, strategically placed cameras and our all-encompassing aware crime control center," said Police Commissioner Christopher Sapienza.

Peter Thompson, with Yonkers SNUG, works to reduce violence and mediate conflict by directly connecting with high-risk community members.

Some people that News 12 spoke with say they're happy to hear the statistics, but say some communities are still more affected by crime than others.

"Some communities are still having struggles with issues in reducing violence, so it's pretty accurate, but we still need to work on some communities," said Thompson.
