Police reminded people Monday to baby-proof their homes following an accident where a toddler died after an 80-pound TV fell on him last week.
Officials have ruled it an accident, although the case remains under investigation.
It happened in an apartment on the corner of Frederick Street and Shippan Avenue. Officials say a 22-month-old climbed up on an unsteady dresser that had an old-fashioned TV set on top of it.
The child toppled the dresser, resulting in the TV coming down on his head.
Kenny Rhodes, the owner of Peak-A-Boo Baby Proofing, recommends creating safe spaces for children by using gates to limit their movement.
He also says furniture like TVs and dressers should be strapped to the wall so that they can't topple over.
Other things Rhodes looks for are sharp edges, which he uses foam on to prevent injury, and he often covers outlets for protection.
"It's so important to do this, and it's very easy," says Rhodes. "Most of these things can be done by you as a mom or a dad or somebody who's got a slight level of confidence working with tools."
Rhodes says he started his business after his first son died from sudden infant death syndrome.
While SIDS isn't preventable, he says he felt like other tragedies involving young children are.
