One man died and several others were injured when a fire broke out inside a South Plainfield home early Wednesday morning. The fire was reported just before 5 a.m. at a home on Cedarbrook Avenue.
Crews from South Plainfield, as well as multiple nearby towns, responded to help bring the fire under control. The home is located about two blocks away from the John C. Riley Elementary School in a mostly residential neighborhood.
Smoke could still be seen pouring out of the home about an hour after the fire started.
The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office says an unresponsive man was found upstairs when first responders arrived. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials say two other adults were inside the home at the time of the fire. They escaped with minor injuries, according to officials. Officials also say three first responders also had minor injuries while putting out the fire. They were treated and released.
The name of the man who died was not released.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known, but authorities say that it does not appear to be suspicious.
