Firefighters and the community rallied around a fallen firefighter from Newtown who was laid to rest Monday.

His funeral was held at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church in Newtown.

Pete Blomberg, 72, was the assistant fire chief of Botsford Fire Rescue.

Last Monday, he was hit and killed by a pickup truck while crossing the street.

It happened just after 6 p.m. on Monday while he was on his way to a fire commissioners meeting. Officials said he responded to two calls that day and they are considering this a line of duty death. Blomberg started his fire career more than 50 years ago at Hawleyville Fire Company in Newtown.

He also worked maintenance at Newtown Public Schools until his retirement six weeks ago. Those who knew him say he was a great person and he made a big impact on his community.

There was a procession from the church to Saint Rose Cemetery in Sandy Hook.

Gov. Ned Lamont also directed flags to be lowered to half-staff on Monday.
