Man fatally hit by train at downtown Fairfield station

The train was bound for Grand Central, but was on the south side of the station due to track work. That side was shut down until noon, but service in both directions still operated from the north side. Some trains were delayed by 10 to 15 minutes, according to the MTA.

What began as the typical morning commute at the train station in downtown Fairfield turned into anything but Thursday. Police said just before 8:20 a.m., a man on the platform appeared to jump onto the tracks and was hit and killed by the oncoming train. Local police are assisting MTA officials with the investigation.

"We will review everything including video surveillance to see if we can piece this together as to why this happened," Chief Michael Paris told News 12.

The train was bound for Grand Central, but was on the south side of the station due to track work. That side was shut down until noon, but service in both directions still operated from the north side. Some trains were delayed by 10 to 15 minutes, according to the MTA.

Like most morning rush hours, police said the platform was pretty packed with people who witnessed it.

"We had our social worker here," Paris said. "These are tragic situations and not something we want to see in the morning, so of course we will do anything possible to make sure everybody is okay as a result of seeing this," Paris said.
