Transportation costs for fans heading to the FIFA World Cup at MetLife Stadium are continuing to fall, and an unconventional solution is helping make the tournament more affordable, yellow school buses.

Officials announced that round-trip bus fares to the stadium have been reduced from $80 to $20.

The lower fares are being made possible in part by expanding capacity through the use of school buses, which will support traditional transportation options throughout the tournament.

On non-school days, organizers say 18,000 bus seats will be available for fans traveling to the stadium. On school days, that number will be reduced to 12,000 seats.

The move is part of a broader effort by state and local officials to address mounting criticism over transportation costs tied to the World Cup.

“We’re grateful to Gov. Hochul, Gov. Sherrill, Mayor Mamdani and our partners across New York and New Jersey for their efforts to help make the entire World Cup experience more affordable and accessible for everyone,” said Alex Lasry, CEO of the NYNJ World Cup Host Committee. “Fan experience is one of our top priorities.”

For fans who already purchased the original $80 bus tickets, officials say refunds will be issued to cover the price difference.

The bus fare reduction comes just one day after NJ Transit also lowered train ticket prices for World Cup service. Those fares, which were initially set at $150, have now been reduced to $98.

“We have some corporate partners that have thrown in to drive those ticket costs down,” said Governor Mikie Sherill in a press conference Tuesday. “We are still putting pressure on FIFA.”

NJ Transit train tickets for World Cup matches officially went on sale at midnight Wednesday.
