EXCLUSIVE: Adventureland's 'Wave Twister' stalled more than once, leaving riders suspended midair

A new thrill ride at Adventureland has sparked concern after stalling midair - at least twice - leaving riders suspended about 25 feet above the ground.

As previously reported, the “Wave Twister” abruptly stopped during a recent ride, stranding passengers, including children, in the air until emergency crews responded.

News 12 has since confirmed the incident was not isolated.

The ride also malfunctioned four days earlier, temporarily trapping students and teachers from a Farmingdale middle school. In that instance, the ride resumed operation after a short delay, and no emergency rescue was required.

“I’ve never really been a fan of rollercoasters, and that’s the main reason why,” said Carolyn Smith of Massapequa.

With summer vacation approaching, some parents say they are hesitant to visit the park until they’re confident the rides are safe.

“Until we get better clearance about what’s going on, I wouldn’t go two feet near there,” said Darryl Hawkins, of Deer Park.

Adventureland declined an on-camera interview, but a spokesperson said an interruption in communication between the ride’s computer system and the ride itself caused Friday’s stoppage. The park said it is working with the manufacturer to determine why the signal was lost.

The “Wave Twister” will remain closed until further notice.

“I’m sure they’ll fix the problem, and I don’t think Adventureland wants anything to happen to children,” said Tony Sangemino, of West Babylon.

Park officials say personnel conduct daily inspections on every ride. The New York State Department of Labor also performs annual inspections and unannounced safety checks throughout the season.

“Hopefully they fix it and it never happens again,” Smith said.

Adventureland also told News 12 that Friday’s incident marked the first time in the park’s history that riders had to be evacuated by the fire department. Officials noted that occasional ride stoppages can occur but are typically resolved quickly.
