2 firefighters hospitalized for heat exhaustion while battling house fire

Two Bergenfield firefighters were hospitalized for heat exhaustion, and several other were treated on the scene while fighting a house fire Sunday afternoon.
According to fire officials, crews responded to Brown Place at about 12:30 p.m. For reports of a structure fire in a home. When Fire Chief Edward Kneisler III arrived at the location, he noticed smoke billowing from windows on the first and second floors. None of the residents were in the home when first responders arrived.
"Thanks to the quick actions of a neighbor, all occupants of the home were safely evacuated before firefighters
arrived," the fire department said in a statement.
In addition to crews from Bergenfield, crews from neighboring towns also responded to provide mutual aid. Firefighters began dousing the flames and also conducted searches to make sure there were no remaining occupants in the house.
Fire officials say in addition to the heavy smoke, crews also had to endure high heat as temperatures were in the 80s Sunday.
"Two Bergenfield firefighters were transported by ambulance to Holy Name Hospital for treatment of heat
Exhaustion," officials said in a statement. "Several other firefighters were evaluated at the scene by emergency medical personnel and were cleared to continue operations."
No injuries to residents were reported. Officials say the cause of the fire is under investigation.
