The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office has released additional information regarding a stabbing at a United States Postal Office in Carmel.
Police say a 38-year-old Nanuet man, Howard McNiff, is suspected of stabbing a post office worker Thursday in Carmel.
McNiff is charged with attempted murder in the second degree, two counts of assault in the second degree, and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree.
Police say they received a 911 call reporting a disturbance inside a building at 29 Fair Street around 3 p.m.
Deputies arrived at the scene, deployed a taser, and took McNiff into custody after finding him still armed with a knife.
The victim, a 61-year-old Carmel man, sustained multiple stab wounds in the upper torso and was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
A second post office employee was cut on the arm while attempting to stop the attack. They declined medical attention.
Police say the victim and McNiff knew each other. They believe it was an isolated incident that poses no further threat to the community.
Fair Street between Route 52 and Vink Drive were closed for around two hours during the investigation.
The suspect remains in police custody, and criminal charges are pending, according to authorities.
