A new bill is pushing the New York City government to be more transparent about paying for third-party communications.
The proposal would require the local government to disclose when it pays for material from content creators or social media influencers.
Any post by someone who is not considered a public servant would have to add “Paid for by the City of New York" or the name of the associated agency.
Agencies that do not comply could be charged with a misdemeanor or potentially face investigation by the Campaign Finance Board.
