A 5-year-old New Canaan boy remained in the hospital Friday after authorities say he nearly drowned at Chelsea Piers in Stamford.
Authorities said they would be speaking with witnesses and managers at the pool to find out happened to the boy, who, as News 12 is told, was put under sedation to help with his seizures.
The incident happened around 12:45 p.m. Thursday. Fire Capt. Stuart Rieve says the boy was swimming with several other children at a summer program at Chelsea Piers and went underwater. There were at least two lifeguards on duty.
Police told News 12 by phone Friday that surveillance video shows the boy was underwater for more than three minutes before he was pulled out. They did not release further details, saying they're in the early stages of their investigation.
A spokesperson from Chelsea Piers released a statement Friday afternoon saying: "We are always reviewing our best practices when it comes to the safety of the children and adults who use Chelsea Piers. During all camp swim & splash recreation periods, we always meet and/or exceed all life guarding and safety requirements. Lifeguards are all certified and we employ best practices as outlined by the American Red Cross."
