Organizers of the sixth annual Car Free Day Long Island are urging drivers to keep their cars at home on Sept. 21.
They are asking residents to participate in the celebration of sustainable transportation.
Nassau County Executive Laura Curran acknowledged that it is hard for some residents to completely drop car transportation for the day, but encouraged them to be “car-lite” for the day.
“See if there's one small thing you can do that day, whether it’s taking a walk to your local deli to get a coffee instead of driving,” she said.
Curran, along with Long Island Rail Road President Phil Eng and NICE Bus CEO Jack Khzouz , urged people to use public transportation. NICE Bus is currently testing an app with which commuters can call a small shuttle bus directly to their home.
According to the Car Free Day website, 6,808 Long Islanders in 2017 pledged to be car free or car-lite, resulting in the avoidance of 134,000 miles of driving and 67 tons of CO2 emissions.
