AAA Northeast in Milford named Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Cindy Iodice as its Traffic Safety Leadership Heroes for 2022.
Iodice lost her brother in 2020 when he was hit and killed on the Merritt Parkway while working as a tow truck driver.
Iodice started the nonprofit Flagman Safety to help keep highway workers safe by educating current and future drivers.
"The best way to do that is to go into the schools with one from every agency, Every first responder and highway worker -- introduce them to the kids. This is who works on the side of the road, this is what they wear. This is what they drive and here's what we can do to help them get home safely,” she says.
Iodice says Blumenthal has been instrumental in helping the program get national attention.
Connecticut law requires drivers to slow down and move over for any stationary emergency vehicles.
