One of the two AAA clubs that services Connecticut stopped offering state drivers license and ID card renewals to non-members.

The policy change pertains to just AAA Northeast, which has eight offices in Fairfield, New Haven and Litchfield counties. Originally, AAA non-members had to pay an additional $5 to renew a drivers license or ID card.

AAA spokesperson Fran Mayko says over past five years, license requirements increased the time a transaction takes. She says the number of non-members using their services also went up more than 50 percent.

"It's becoming very difficult for us, for AAA Northeast, to meet our customer service mission to our own members," Mayko says.

Gov. Dannel Malloy has called this decision unacceptable and has threatened legal action if AAA Northeast doesn't reverse its decision. He says the decision violates its contract with the Department of Motor Vehicles.

The DMV released a statement saying it's disappointed in AAA Northeast's actions and hopes it reverses the policy.

The change does not affect AAA offices operated by another affiliate in the rest of the state.
