An alleged member of the 'Green Boys' gang was arrested on illegal gun and drug possession Thursday, police say.
Russell Gilchrist, 22, was arrested Thursday at the Green Homes Federal Housing Projects on Highland Avenue in Bridgeport.
Police say Gilchrist, a convicted felon and alleged gang member, was found to be in possession of an assault rifle, two 30-round capacity magazines, a handgun and narcotics.
"We need to stop the violence in Bridgeport because our children are getting killed," said city councilwoman Jeanette Heron. "Assault rifles are not necessary. We're in a city, we're not in a war. We're not overseas fighting someone else's battle. We're fighting among ourselves and we should not be doing that."
Bridgeport police and state task force officers executed a search warrant at the federal housing project on a tip that Gilchrist had illegal firearms.
Police say Gilchrist was staying with a woman and her juvenile children inside a sixth-floor apartment.
Gilchrist was arrested without incident and charged with several firearm related charges, narcotics, and risk of injury to children.
He is being held on a $250,000 bond and is expected to be arraigned Friday.
