Amity High School students have opened their hearts and their wallets to help a family bury their son in their native Albania.
Francesk Zefi and his friend, Salvatore Sammonella, were killed Monday night when the car they were riding in crashed on the Wilbur Cross Parkway.
Zefi?s body is to be flown to his native country for burial. When students found out that only one member of the Zefi family could afford to accompany the teen?s body to Albania, they immediately sprung into action.
Students and staff set up tables at the entrance of the school to collect donations. School Superintendent Dr. John Brady says in just two hours, more than $3,000 was collected Thursday. Students also sold t-shirts with pictures of both teens on them.
As of Friday afternoon, Brady says $30,000 was collected. A portion of the donated funds will be given to Zefi?s family for his burial. The rest of the donations will be used to start a scholarship in honor of Semmonella.
