An animal cruelty investigation is underway after a dog, who officers say was tortured, was hit by two cars last week.
This is the third case in the New Haven area within the past few weeks.
Woodbridge Animal Control officers responded to Heroes Tunnel on Merritt Parkway last week after the dog was struck.
When officers arrived at the scene, they noticed that one of the dog’s legs was facing the wrong direction. They say that the one-year-old mastiff mix, now named Merritt, was also covered in new and old wounds.
"We got her to the vet's office," says Karen Lombardi, Lead Animal Control Officer. "We realized there were many wounds of various ages that were bite wounds."
Officers believe Merritt had been used for fighting and dog training.
Merritt had to have a leg amputated, but is on the road to recovery. Merritt is rehabbing with Animal Control Officer Ashley Sakelarakis at her home.
As Merritt recuperates, Woodbridge Animal Control is reaching out to the public and asking anyone if they recognize her to try and locate her owner.
Officers are also turning to the community for donations. Merritt's medical bills have already topped $5,000.
