Bridgeport police say they've taken a cache of illegal handguns off the street along with heroin packaged for sale.
Police Chief AJ Perez says two Bridgeport men were arrested after gunfire broke out Saturday at Elements Cafe, which led police to the scene at Silliman Place and East Main Street.
Officials say they were watching the business, after learning there would be a birthday party there attended by known gang members when the gunshots rang out.
They say they rushed in and pulled over a car that contained four illegal handguns, two with high-capacity magazines, along with multiple packets of heroin.
Police say they arrested 19-year-old Nazjeir Diaz, along with 19-year-old Khyren Best, both of Bridgeport.
Police Chief AJ Perez says by taking the suspects into custody, his department has interrupted a supply chain that channels guns and drugs into the city.
Officials say at least one of the guns was in plain sight when they pulled the car over.
