National and local leaders held a press confrence outside a Bridgeport church Sunday in wake of the Texas shooting in Odessa.
At the meeting, Sen. Richard Blumenthal said that he and Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-South Carolina) have drafted a comprehensive measure to address the ongoing problem of mass shootings.
The measure calls for a red flag emergency risk protection order statute that would take guns away from people with mental illness.
Sen. Blumenthal says the bipartisan measure also calls for a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim says this change would also target every day shootings. "Day-to-day violence in our cities, here in Bridgeport and across the country needs to end," he says. "I'm committed to doing that alongside the leadership of Sen. Blumenthal has provided on a national level."
Another Bridgeport church in the East End held a Sunday service to pray for the victims of the Texas shootings.
State Rep. Charlie Stallworth, a pastor at the church, says parishioners have a common question that always comes up. "How long will it take you know some action to come out of D.C., how long will it take for us to reach out and stop this epidemic that's going on that's destroying our county?"
