Brick Township has lowered the speed limit on Lanes Mill Road following the hit-and-run death of a 15-year-old, but residents said the change won't solve broader safety and traffic concerns near several schools.

According to investigators, Jackson Mueller was riding a bike on Lanes Mills when he was hit by a speeding car that fled the scene. The stretch of road serves several Brick schools from preschool through high school.

"There's plenty of problems on Lanes Mills Road. I personally don't think dropping the speed limit 5 miles is enough," one resident told council members.

Concerns about traffic and pedestrian safety have intensified with the new school year underway.

According to the Brick Township Police Department, a driver dropping off a student at Brick Memorial High School fled from police on Lanes Mills Road around 7 a.m. Thursday, prompting a pursuit in the area.

"This morning there was a major situation where two crossing guards almost got hit, and then there was a five-police-car chase," another resident said during public comment.

Residents said speeding, traffic congestion and unsafe driving behaviors remain ongoing issues, particularly during morning drop-off hours.

"I watched a gentleman go around three times trying to drop off his kids," one speaker said. "Now add in there if he has to get to work, if he has to get another child on a bus. The angst... just people panicking, doing illegal turns in the middle of the road."

Several residents called for township officials, parents and school leaders to work together on additional solutions.

"We really need to get together, council members, parents, people that are here, Board of Education, and get in one room," one resident said. "We keep going around and around."

While township officials have moved forward with the speed limit reduction, many residents said they want broader changes to prevent another tragedy on Lanes Mills Road.
