Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch says if the state doesn?t restore school funding in its 2008-2009 budget, the city?s Board of Education will likely cut full-day kindergarten classes.
Money for the program is not currently in the new state budget lawmakers are working on. Finch says that amounts to a $3 million loss for the city. According to Finch, without that money, the full-day kindergarten program will likely be cut from the city?s budget.
Approximately 300 children would be affected if the program is cut.
Some state lawmakers say there is a chance the money could be put back in the budget. A finalized spending plan is expected sometime next week.
