A Bridgeport family spent their holiday grieving after their teenage son was shot to death on Christmas Eve.
Police say 14-year-old Luis Colon appears to have been an innocent bystander in the shooting on State Street.
Police say the shooting happened around 4:15 p.m. Thursday, when Colon was crossing the street while he was shopping for his mother. Police say he walked into the line of gunfire.
Officials have arrested 23-year-old Michael Majors in connection with the shooting.
City officials say Colon's death marks Bridgeport's 19th murder of the 2015. There were 12 murders in the city 2014, they say.
Investigators tell News 12 Connecticut they will soon be unveiling the specifics of a detailed plan they have to irradiate the ongoing problem of drug trafficking along State Street, which they say led to the death of Colon.
"What took place here on Christmas Eve was the result of some kind of dispute for control of the drug market in that general area of State Street," says Bridgeport Police Capt. A.J. Perez.
Solmarie Rivera, Colon's mother, said she brought her kids from Puerto Rico to Bridgeport one year ago in search of a better life.
Hector Colon says his brother was a likable person who was always happy. He says the ninth-grader at Harding High School was especially happy to be living with his family in their own apartment.
City Councilwoman Eneida Martinez says before that, the family was living in a shelter.
As police continue their investigation, Rivera says she will always remember her son's sweet smile and caring heart.
City Councilwoman Martinez is asking that all donations for Colon's funeral be brought directly to the family at 238 Wood Ave.
The family is also planning a candlelight vigil on Monday at 6 p.m. in front of the store where the shooting took place.
