Some residents of a Bridgeport apartment complex are marching for peace days after a deadly mass shooting.
According to police, two gunmen opened fire at the Trumbull Gardens Apartment Complex last Wednesday, killing one person and injuring eight others.
The slain victim was identified as 37-year-old Savonnie McNeil, of Shelton.
Parishioners of El Shadei Church of God say they got together after the tragedy and talked about several ways to honor the man who died and those who were injured. They held an unconventional service in the parking lot of Trumbull Gardens and marched from one end of the complex to the other.
The event was led by Rev. Mary McBride Lee, who says there is an urgent social need in Bridgeport to help reduce crime going forward.
Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch was also at Trumbull Gardens at around the time of the march. "People in this neighborhood deserve to be free of fear from gun violence," he says.
The marchers say the day was one of reflection of the bloodshed and life lost during the shooting, as well as the lessons learned from it. They say it underscores the need to rid Bridgeport of illegal guns.
The suspects in the shooting remain at large.
