Lost and stray animals will soon have a new place to call home with Thursday's ribbon cutting of a Bridgeport animal shelter.

Mayor John Fabrizi says the shelter, located on Evergreen Street, was sorely needed. The facility can house 80 dogs. Builders incorporated sound-absorbent ceilings, bacteria-resistant floors that slope toward drains and a drainage system to flush away waste.The site is comprised of four buildings that will not only house cats and dogs, but also vet services and an adoption center.The city is putting the finishing touches on the complex, which used to house greyhounds that raced at Shoreline Star Dog Track. The renovations, which started about six months ago, are expected to be complete by mid-December.
