Roaches and rat droppings were just a few of the violations found by health inspectors when they checked in on Bronx and city public school cafeterias.
The New York Post reports that nearly one in 10 public school cafeterias failed inspections last year, which is almost three times the previous year's rate. PS/MS 20 in Bedford Park received the most violations out of any city school. Health inspectors found 65 food service violations on their most recent visit. The inspectors reported seeing rodents on glue traps in both the kitchen and area where dry food is stored. Other school cafeterias cited include IS 22, PS 138 and PS 55. According to the Post, the cafeteria at IS 22 was closed immediately by inspectors, PS 138 had a dead roach in the dough mixer and PS 55 was cited for having 26 rat droppings in a storage area.
One Department of Education official says the violations are unacceptable. The officials says the DOE vows to slash the number of violations by 25 percent next year.
