A man arrested last month in a 2017 fatal shooting in Flatbush appeared in court on Monday.
Dean and Rasheed Boland are accused of shooting and killing 20-year-old Justin Hackley when he was home from college in Flatbush during summer break in 2017.
Dean appeared in court, but Rasheed, who was undergoing a mental evaluation, was not there. Rasheed was arrested in Texas in 2019. Dean had been on the run until he was arrested in Albany.
Justin Hackley's mother, Marie Bernard, says each court appearance is a step closer to her and her family's peace.
"We've been waiting for so long for this to happen. We're just taking it in and just praying to God to continue to protect us and guide us and allow justice to be served," said Bernard.
Both face murder charges and could serve 25 years to life in prison, if convicted. They are due back in court on March 19.
