Southwestern Connecticut parents are concerned after an outbreak of the chickenpox hit more than two dozen children in Monroe.Dr. Robert Chessin of Pediatric Health Care Associates says the best way for parents to protect their children is to make sure they are immunized. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now recommends children get a second vaccine, starting at age 5, to avoid the chickenpox. Dr. Chessin also recommends parents who haven't had the disease, also get the vaccine.Doctors also caution parents against exposing their kids to the disease just to get it over with. They say while the disease is always itchy, it can be deadly in rare cases. Dr. Chessin says there have been 100 deaths in the U.S. due to complications from chickenpox.
