More than 50 workers from the city of Bridgeport received layoff notices this week as the result of unsuccessful negotiations with the union representing them.
The 51 workers, who are all members of the National Association of Government Employees, work in the city's planning department, zoning department and the city clerk's office.
Mayor Bill Finch says he was forced to make the cuts since the union wouldn't make any compromises. He says he will consider reinstating the workers if the union agrees on certain concessions.
Mayor Finch says the layoffs will save the city approximately $900,000 in six months.
