School staff and students took part in a closed meeting on the Fairfield University campus Wednesday night to discuss a controversial party held off campus.
School officials are investigating a so-called "ghetto party," in which witnesses say party guests dressed and acted in ways perpetuating racial stereotypes. It allegedly took place Feb. 20, involving Fairfield University students at one of the rented houses along Fairfield Beach.
Officials say those stereotypes devalue people, and they hope to come up with some solutions.
Bridgeport City Councilwoman Mary McBride says what allegedly took place shouldn't have happened.
"It's very insensitive of them to do something like that," she says. "We have to start thinking before we act."
Officials say that even though the party was off campus, students can still be held to the conduct guidelines outlined in the student handbook.
