A community in Belmont turned a vacant lot into a community garden.
The 'Garden of Happiness' is a garden located in the middle of Prospect Avenue between 181st and 182nd streets.
The space started out as a vacant, garbage-filled lot in 1988, when founder Karen Washington decided to make it a community garden with the help of the Parks Department. It is now an expansive space, providing everything from hot peppers for a Bronx hot sauce, to eggs from the garden's seven chickens.
"By providing the food that's local and nutritious, it really helps build character. It also gives people an understanding not only where their food comes from, but the relationship between food and health, which is very important," says Washington.
Everything grown in the garden is sold at a farmer's market, which opens in July.
