Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Andres Ayala has resigned.

Critics have blamed Ayala for an unsuccessful rollout of the DMV's new computer system.

Ayala, having taken over the DMV a year ago, has been under scrutiny since the agency shut down for a week in August to roll out a massive $25 million computer overhaul.

The system has since been plagued with problems, and has led to extremely long lines and paperwork delays for months. In December, a computer backlog led to thousands of drivers mistakenly losing their vehicle registrations.

The Hartford Courant reports that Ayala turned in his resignation to Gov. Dannel P. Malloy Tuesday night and it will take effect Friday.

The newspaper says Ayala decided to step down just days after the Courant requested documents about a former Democratic staffer and convicted felon that Ayala hired for the DMV last year.

There is no word yet on who will take over as interim commissioner.
