Drivers who headed out for the holiday weekend Wednesday had plenty of company, as the day was expected to be one of the busiest travel days.

News 12 heard from travelers and truckers, with some tips for fellow drivers.

"You'll find some different types of drivers. They'll take a lot of risks," said Adam Grate, from New Jersey.

Grate has been driving trucks for 12 years. He said he's driven in 48 states. He said drivers in the northeast are the worst.

Grate reminds people to be aware and share the road.

"Best thing I can say is stay out of the way of trucks, stay alert and if you ever feel sleepy - because sleep on the road feels different from sleep at home - pull over, take a 15, 20-minute nap, you'll be surprised how that changes how you feel," said Grate.

A Long Island couple traveling to Vermont had this advice, "No drinking and driving, and don't be mean to other drivers on the road, don't cut them off, don't honk at them and don't tailgate."

Police want to remind people to stay off their phone while driving.

AAA says drivers need to give themselves plenty of time for their trip and leave early. They advise people to make sure their car is in proper working order and check their oil and tire pressure ahead of time.
