Six years after a woman was kidnapped and sexually assaulted by two men while jogging in Darien, police arrested her second alleged attacker.
Darien authorities say the woman was running along Rings End Road when Alejandro Mendez, of Norwalk, and Jose Amaya, of East Rutherford, drove up to her, hit her on the head with a bottle and forced her into their car. The suspects then drove to a secluded area nearby and assaulted her, police say.
According to Sgt. Jeremiah Marron, of the Darien Police Department, following the incident Mendez and Amaya attempted to flee to Mexico. However, only Amaya managed to cross the border because Mendez was arrested in California a month after the attack. He is now serving a 15-year prison sentence.
On Tuesday, Amaya was taken into custody in Mexico and brought back to southwestern Connecticut to face a judge.
"The victim is going to be satisfied, and she can close the book on this portion of the incident," says Lt. Ronald Bussell, of the Darien Police Department.
Amaya was arraigned at Stamford Superior Court Wednesday on three counts of first-degree sexual assault and one count of first-degree kidnapping. He is being held on a $750,000 bond.
