Darien police are offering a new $50,000 reward relating to the 1981 murder of Officer Kenneth Bateman.

Police say the reward is being offered for information that will lead to recovery of the gun used in the death of Bateman.

On May 31, 1981, Bateman responded to a reported break-in at the Duchess.

Police say while Bateman waited for backup, he encountered a suspect leaving the scene and the two began shooting at each other.

Bateman was shot, wounded and later died from injuries.

A separate $100,000 reward is still being offered for any information that will lead to the arrest and convictions of those involved.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the department's detective division at 203-662-5330.

All tips will remain confidential.
