Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) will learn Tuesday if he is going to remain chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee.Lieberman will meet with Democratic senators in a closed-door session and a secret vote will then be held. Some Democrats argue Lieberman deserves to be punished for supporting Sen. John McCain's (R-Ariz.) presidential bid and criticizing the Democratic Party's candidate, President-elect Barack Obama. Obama has told party leaders that he wants Lieberman to stay with the Democrats. If the party did take away Lieberman's chairmanship, Obama says it would send a bad message as he tries to unify the country.Democratic aides say it is possible Lieberman would receive a smaller punishment, such as losing a subcommittee chairmanship.Lieberman was the Democratic vice-presidential nominee in 2000. He is still a registered Democrat and aligns with the Democratic Party in the Senate.
