Health experts have tips on how to stay safe in frigid temperatures.
While the coronavirus is still a major concern this year, emergency medicine specialist Dr. Kilbourn Gordon III says it's also important to prevent injuries related to cold weather.
"When people are more isolated, they are more likely to have things like frostbite and hypothermia where people aren't looking out for each other," he says.
He adds that the elderly and those with mental disabilities are at a higher risk.
"Hypothermia can happen just from exposure. They are outside and they get confused and they may not recognize that, and they can obviously succumb to that," Dr. Kilbourn says.
Health experts say, thanks to the pandemic, other viruses like the common cold, are less of a risk this year.
Dr. Kilbourn says, "Because of COVID, people are wearing masks more and we've actually seen less viral syndrome than in prior years."
Experts say the biggest way to keep yourself safe this winter is to avoid getting wet, layer clothes, and continue to wear a mask and social distance.
