Dr. David Chess has declared victory in the Stratford mayoral race against incumbent Laura Hoydick.

The race between Hoydick and Chess was expected to be close.

Democrats have declared this race by about 1300 votes, claiming 7 out of 10 districts. Well, I'm hoping that it sends a real message. That, that we do believe in democracy," said Chess. "That democracy matters. That we, that we care about our communities. We are dedicated to caring about each other".

State officials say thousands of residents voted ahead of the election, with Stratford ranked among the top municipalities that participated in early voting in the state.

Hoydick has been mayor for seven years. Chess is a geriatrician, internist and entrepreneur.

Both candidates have spoken to voters on various issues, ranging from the economy, law enforcement, housing and environmental policy.

The police, firefighters and teamsters unions have endorsed Chess for the first time, citing a loss of trust and poor leadership under Hoydick's administration.

"You need a vision. You need a plan. You just can't go, go on," said Chess. "You know, in small accomplishments with a path. There has to be a way forward. And I gave people hope, division, a plan, and incredibility that this is someone who knows how to do it".

Chess has advocated for making Stratford taxes "fairer," while Hoydick's 2026 proposal budget includes no increases in taxes.

The incumbent is also known for her business-friendly approach.

Democrats are looking to flip Stratford as it is a competitive target for Republicans.

"I think that this race along with some other of the mayorals is gonna show soft of what everything is gonna look like next year," said State Representative Josh Elliot. "So, if we can take this down, then it shows we can get bigger wins."

News 12 was not allowed into Hoydick's headquarters.
