An elderly man was killed in a crash Tuesday morning in Fairfield.
A tractor-trailer and an SUV collided at the intersection of Burroughs Road and Black Rock Turnpike at about 5:30 a.m., within two hours of a fatal accident on I-95.
First responders say they had to extricate 85-year-old Albert Kavalek, of Fairfield, with the Jaws of Life after the tractor-trailer hit his SUV.
Because of the shutdown on I-95, many truckers got off at Exit 23 so they could bypass that accident and get back on the highway at Exit 24.
Officials say Kavalek later died of his injuries. They say Kavalek worked as a firefighter in Bridgeport before retiring after 23 years.
Kavalek is survived by his 92-year-old sister.
