A deadly shooting outside a Jewish museum in Washington, D.C., has triggered concern in New York’s Jewish community.
News 12 has learned exclusively how the NYPD is responding.
Two Israeli Embassy staff members, Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim, were shot and killed Wednesday night, just steps from the Capital Jewish Museum.
Elias Rodriguez was arrested in connection to the shooting.
Officials say he posed as a bystander after the shooting.
In an exclusive interview, Rebecca Weiner, NYPD deputy commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism, told News 12 there is no current link between the Washington, D.C. attack and New York City.
“We want to be very clear and we want to reassure New Yorkers that we see no nexus to NYC involving this incident,” Weiner said.
Still, with antisemitic threats surging since Oct. 7, 2024, the NYPD isn’t taking any chances.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we will surge our resources around the city, both to deter any would-be copycat or bad actor from doing something similar and to reassure the public,” she said.
Weiner said the department has already increased patrols around synagogues, community centers and other vulnerable sites.
She urged New Yorkers to be vigilant and report anything suspicious to 1-888-NYC-SAFE.
As investigators continue to piece together the shooter’s motive, officials say New Yorkers are a critical line of defense in preventing another tragedy.
