The former Town of Fairfield financial chief officer is facing charges Friday related to the investigation of the ongoing 'fill pile' issue.

Robert Mayer turned himself into police around 11:30 a.m. Mayer has been charged with burglary, larceny and tampering with evidence.

Police say Mayer removed several file folders containing documents belonging to the town and some were related to the 'fill pile' investigation.

Mayer was terminated from his job on Jan. 15 after First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick, who took office at the end of November, chose not to renew his employment.

Police say that's when Mayer went back to Sullivan Independence Hall and took the documents.

First Selectwoman Kupchick released a statement saying, "I cannot comment on personnel matters or the ongoing criminal investigation. I would like to thank the Fairfield police department for their investigative work and I will continue to cooperate with law enforcement to bring to justice those who have compromised the health and safety of our residents."

As News 12 has reported, the town's DPW director and superintendent as well as a construction company owner were arrested in August. They are accused of illegally dumping contaminants such as led and PCBs in the pile, which led to the remediation of several parks and fields in town.

Mayer was released on $10,000 bond and is due back in court Monday.
