A Fairfield pastor said Thursday that his church is being forced out by their landlord, which happens to be another church.
Pastor Colley Criss, of Word of Life Church on Kings Highway East, says he was given three days notice to clear out. He says his church has rented the building for the last year from the Calvin United Church of Christ next door.
Criss says he had a very relaxed verbal agreement for a five-year lease at $1,500 a month with their landlord. Calvin United Church of Christ's Supply Pastor Tibor Kiraly says Criss' church now owes more than $14,000 in rent and utilities.
Kiraly says they gave Criss notice six months ago, but Criss claims he just got the letter this week. He says the timing is pretty terrible with the holidays quickly approaching.
Criss says they will pay up, but they need some time to do so. He says they are talking with their lawyer and are starting to look for new places to worship.
