Fairfield police are cracking down on vandalism and dangerous illegal activity at the Lake Mohegan Cascades.
The sign at the entrance near Morehouse Highway and Mohican Hill Road states the Cascades are open from sunrise to an hour after sunset.
Police said there have been complaints in recent weeks of large groups of people breaking into the gated area after hours to swim and consume alcohol. Both activities are prohibited, according to police. "No swimming" and "no alcohol" signs can be seen near the walking trails.
Police say they've stepped up patrols in the area.
"We've had extra patrols, which include our bicycle officers, our special officers to give it a little extra presence," Lt. Michael Paris said. "We've issued about 10 violations so far. They are mail-in fines, which can continue to add up to pretty hefty fines."
